Men´s Health - No More secrets educational seminars

Freemasons WA continue to support the national Freemasons initiative of "Men´s Health No More Secrets" educational seminars. Other states undertaking this initiative concentrated their efforts on the shorter term, however, WA Freemasons have undertaken a long term view by providing seminars throughout Western Australia over a twelve month period. Freemasons WA is in the process of finalizing a strategic plan for the ongoing commitment to Men´s Health in WA. This initiative shall be presented to the National Body and it appears our philosophy of ongoing education shall be supported by the other states. A meeting will be held with Nick Tolhurst, Senior Program Manager Public Health Older People, Rural, Men, Indigenous, e-health from "Beyondblue" and Jeff Kennett who is the Chairman of Beyondblue initiative. During the meeting we will be presenting the work undertaken by WA Freemasons as well as catching up with any new initiatives which are to be discussed.

"We are really excited about this new partnership and very pleased to be able to work with such a prestigious aged care provider. Others within the industry could take a leaf out of their book and realize that an investment in evidence-based practice is critical to quality service sustainability." Curtin University´s Vice Chancellor, Professor Lance Twomey.

University of NSW

Freemasons WA has also joined in some collaborative research with the University of New South Wales and several other high profile organisations, in a research project designed to evaluate the economic, environmental and social psychological issues surrounding independent senior living alternatives in Australia.

The research and the partnerships with allied organisations such as Silver Chain places Freemasons WA of WA in a strong position to contribute effectively on behalf of our residents and the industry within Western Australia, and the information provided will assist in future planning for our independent living communities.

There has been little scientific research in this area to date and this study is believed to be the first of its kind in Australia. Our participation in, and contribution to, this project will provide tangible benefits for the future, both in terms of strategic planning and development and our ability to offer leading edge accommodation and services to both current and future residents.

Leukaemia Foundation in Western Australia

At Freemasons WA we are also in partnership with the Leukaemia Foundation in Western Australia by the provision of four accommodation units which have been made available in our Coolbellup village.

The units are utilised by patients and their families who have been diagnosed with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and other related blood disorders.

With no apparent risk factors and often no real warning, the onset of leukaemia is sudden and treatment often begins within 24 hours of diagnosis. Patients must leave work, school, family commitments and friends to commence their treatment regime. For regional patients, this diagnosis often means immediate relocation of an extended period of time to be close to treatment facilities in the Perth metropolitan area.

The provision of the units means these families can stay together in a ‘home away from home´ environment during a very difficult time in their lives at no cost to them.

Freemasons WA provide this support the Leukaemia Foundation in WA, and the patients and families they support as an ongoing commitment of to make a very real difference every day in the Western Australia community.
